Environmental Programme
The United Nations Environment Programme, established in 1972, is the primary international organization responsible for collaborating with governments in the global dynamics of politics to tackle various environmental challenges. These environmental challenges cover a wide range of topics like pollution on all fronts, issues related to the atmosphere and the ozone layer, biodiversity, climate change, and impacts of the global rise in temperature. Some examples of these past challenges could include the requirement of the ozone layer, saving countless endangered species from extinction, and the phase-out of leaded fuel. Currently, the main objective of UNEP is to utilize diplomatic means to conjure a shift to sustainable use of the earth's natural resources in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. To achieve this goal by the year 2030, UNEP works in cooperation with multiple civil and non-governmental organizations that aid the organ in its quest to provide humanity with a world not tarnished by environmental disasters caused by none other than humanity itself. In this year’s Koç JMUN, UNEP will tackle two agenda items taken from major ecological issues of our contemporary world where meddling affairs of politics and economics spoil the earth's natural resources in two different regions. Delegates participating in the committee will have to debate thoroughly to present solutions to environmental problems the world actively suffers from, while also having to keep in mind the political and economic aspects of the issues that also cannot be ignored straight away. For this, the utilization of political discourse will prove vital as delegates representing the various interests of their states will decide how they will balance the well-being of our planet with political interests.
